Frequently Asked Questions > Why Meditation Is Important > My mind races when I meditate. Now what?.
Our minds are very busy and constantly occupied with "thinking thoughts"; things we must do, places we must be etc. It isn't a surprise to find that the mind wants to race with thoughts when trying to meditate.
Even if you spend your entire meditation pulling your mind away from distracting thoughts, that is okay. Do not be discouraged! Instead, create a meditation practice and stick with it. :)
There's many ways to support your own meditation time. One way is to write down in advance the things you know you "need to get done" or things you know are "on your mind". Writing them down acknowledges them. Then, just put your list aside and allow yourself 5 minutes to be still. This is something anyone can do and it's an easy way to get started. You can also play music that you may find helpful to quiet your mind.
